Inspiring story from Imphal

In the year 1994 – 95, Imphal had been adjudged as the Best Maintain Station Award (under Difficult Station Manchanda Category). For inspection of the above, Shri A. B. Mathur, the then Chief Engineer of East Zone had to visit Imphal.

The night before the inspection date, there was heavy thunder storm lashing Imphal. The undersigned, who was the Superintending Engineer, AIR Imphal, got a telephone call from the transmitter that the aerial of the SW 50 KW Transmitter had fallen. The engineer on duty on that night was none other than Th. Kumar Singh.

With anguish, I told Shri Kumar Singh that tomorrow is the inspection day and aerial of the transmitter broke down. How we are going to claim that our station will be one of the best? For which Th. Kumar Singh answered me, not to worry and I will somehow rectify the fault by tomorrow before inspection.

Next day, the undersigned went to the airport, received the Chief Engineer who in turn asked me, how was the SW Transmitter? (Those days there was no mobile phone). To which the undersigned could not say anything but told we would go to transmitter in the afternoon for inspection.

In the afternoon when the inspection team visited the transmitter, Th. Kumar Singh, AE, received us and shown the SW Transmitter in running condition. During the inspection, I had whispered, TH. Kumar Singh, how did you manage it? He told me that I had climbed up myself and connected the aerial at the top of SW Tower as I did not get anybody because you have told me that the transmitter should be on air tomorrow during inspection.

Later on, the Chief Engineer was informed about the happenings and the incident had made the Chief Engineer to immediately recommend and dedication of the staff working at the Station.

AIR Aizwal has been a vibrant radio station and have witnessed numerous moments of glory in these years.  Akashwani Doordarshan Parivar is proud of hundreds of administrative, engineering, programme and news persons who have worked tirelessly to bring the station to this stage and those who are still working at the station and contributing their pie. 

It’s time to congratulate all of them who have been directly or indirectly associated with the station. We invite all our friends to post their comments to appreciate their efforts.

DATABASE SOFTWARE FOR PROGRAMME SCHEDULING

(An innovative initiative from AIR Solapur)

 Computerised Programme scheduling database software has been designed to meet the requirement of day to day studio logbook & scheduling work for all the transmissions by the programme wing of the station. The main purpose of software is to avoid repetitive work to prepare following statements of the station.

Ø     Daily programme Cue-sheet,

Ø     Studio logbook,

Ø     Commercial broadcasts & Royalty payment statements

Key advantages are

Ø     Go Green– Save lots of paper printing Cue Sheets etc.

Ø  Quick Retrieval– Details of any program broadcast months ago can be found in minutes

Ø      Less Efforts, More efficiency- All required reports are generated by feeding required data only Once.

Ø      Ease of operation- It is very easy to operate and any station can start using it within a week.

Ø     Multi tasking - If database is shared in network, number of persons can work on the software simultaneously.

Ø    Flexibility – Whole of transmission need not be automated in first phase. Only Cue sheet and reports are taken on computer.

Ø      Customization – It’s a home grown application by AIR engineers, who have full rights and source code thus customization and improvement is easily possible.

Ø      Backup - Scheduled backup of database is taken on DAT daily, So that if some one has deleted records by mistake, data can be restored back.

This software is being used at AIR Solapur since Jan. 2003.& has been found to be very useful.
